What is the process like when booking a portrait session with you?
Once you send me an initial email stating your interest, we will figure out what size package you want. From there, we will decide on a time and date that works best for both of us. My available dates fill up quickly, so it's best to be the early bird and get your session date set as soon as possible. Outdoor portraits sessions are available in 2018 from May 1st through November 4th. As for time slots, the light is best outside the last two hours of the day.
Maternity sessions are scheduled the 7th or 8th month of your pregnancy, that way we can get lots of beautiful baby bump photos!
In-home newborn portraits can happen any time of year. These sessions are scheduled within the first 14 days of baby's arrival.
To officially book the session, a 50% retainer fee and signed contract are due to secure your spot. The remaining balance is due on the day of the session.
Where should we do our portraits?
The best place to take photographs is a spot where we can get a good amount of natural light. That means either a spot outside with some shade or a spot inside that has a lot of good sized windows. Surprisingly enough your own backyard and home can be the perfect spot for maternity, newborn, and family portraits. A few other spots I love to take portraits are:
What should we wear?
You can be as low maintenance or glam as you like with your maternity session wardrobe. Some moms like to scour Etsy for the perfect baby-bump dress, while others are happy to hit up the Target maternity section. The most important thing is for you to feel COMFORTABLE.
In October and November, we can still get some pretty comfortable days (at least by midwestern standards!) so be sure to dress for the temperature. Incorporate hats and coats if the temps are below 50 degrees, that way you stay comfortable and everyone's attitudes stay cheerful.
As for shoes, the emphasis here again is to be comfortable. Stay away from heels or high wedges as most of the time we will be traipsing on grass. Cute boots with a slight heel or flats work wonderfully. You can also go barefoot!
What about professional hair and makeup?
Since I primarily work outdoors we are at the mercy of the weather. My rescheduling process is easy (and free!) but often times a makeup and hair appointment is not. Be sure to ask your stylist about waiving the cancellation fee before you book them, just to see if they are flexible!
Can we incorporate props or choose a theme?
Of course! I love using props or a theme for a maternity or newborn portrait session. Great props to use and incorporate are balloons, your ultrasound, blankets, baskets, or a bouquet of flowers. We can also collaborate together. Don't be afraid to send me all your Pinterest ideas!
Can we bring our pet along?
Yes! You would be surprised how many pet+maternity portraits I do every year. I totally understand though, because my cats are definitely family.
Just a few tips for the pups. First and foremost, make sure you bring treats for them. By having treats to keep their attention focused, we can get them to sit and stay and control their gaze (because you know Fido never takes his eye off those treats). Also make sure that they have had at least one walk that day so they aren't go-go-go when we are outside. If you can fit in two - even better. Last, but certainly not least, bring the good leash. It can be very challenging to edit the bad leash out of your favorite photos because you forget the good leash at home. If you don't have a leash that is photo-worthy in your eyes - go out and treat yourself (and Fido) to one!
Do we have to provide our own smash cake?
Yup! I have a few local bakeries to suggest as well if you are interested.
What does the final product look like?
With every package you will receive all the digital photos from the session via Google Drive. If you have never used Google Drive, this online hub is a great way to share high resolution files from one email address to another completely for free. Plus you get to download all the files from our session right to your home computer- no clunky DVDs or CDs to have lying around!
Another special aspect about booking with me is you receive a License for Personal Use to all the digital photos. This means that you get to keep all the original digital photos and retouched digital photos.
On top of receiving all the digital files, YOU get to choose your favorites to be retouched, not me. I know a lot of photographers choose favorites for you and I don't think that's fair. These pictures are yours, so you should be the one to decide what is going in your yearbook and photo albums.
From there you get to share the digital photos on Facebook, email out to loved ones, and make as many prints and albums as you like. All I ask is that if you share on social media that you tag my business at Kelsey Jorissen Photography.
One final important detail to add is I save a copy of all my sessions to an external hard drive and keep them forever. So if you ever have a computer meltdown- no fear, I've got all your files safe and sound.
